Sara's Story
HomeFront Client Recalls "My Place of Miracles"
Two years ago, a case manager for HomeFront, was conducting a routine intake interview
with Sara, 24. She and her two small children had become estranged from her family.
HomeFront quickly determined that Sara was scared, hungry, cold and homeless. When inquired about her health, she looked down at her hands and calmly stated that she was HIV-positive and not receiving treatment. She had not been to a doctor because she had no insurance and no transportation to get to a clinic. And her children had never been tested for the disease.
"I had no idea at the time how fortunate it was for me that I had the courage to walk into HomeFront that day," said Sara. "I was scared and looking for a safe place for my kids and me to sleep that night. My life changed the day I sent to HomeFront."
Within a couple of days, Sara and her two children moved into one of the eight homes in the Siloam program, began medical treatment, were connected with the local support services in the HIV consortium, and were brought into the HomeFront system providing one-on-one case management and a variety of life skills programs.
The Siloam Homes Program is a collaborative, innovative project run by HomeFront and funded by NJ Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency, which provides permanent, affordable housing and support services for individuals who are HIV positive and their families.
Today, Sara and her children are flourishing in their own Siloam home. Her children are regulars in the HomeFront kids' recreation programs and are doing well in school. Sara gets the proper medical support for her illness and is connected to all local resources for someone dealing with HIV.
"The HomeFront programs have taught me to be a better parent and to handle my responsibilities," says Sara. "I learned that Siloam was a biblical pool of water. It was considered a place of miracles where an angel would come down and give physical and spiritual healing to outcasts," explains Sara. "My angel was my case manager and my place of miracles was HomeFront."
