HomeFront staff delivers bags of groceries to local families staying in motels.

HomeFront’s Double Helpings Initiative will assist families hit hardest by the COVID-19 crisis and local restaurants in our community. This initiative will help feed local homeless families staying in area motels two nutritious meals per week. The rest of the meals will be supplemented by grocery bags supplied by HomeFront. This Initiative not only benefits HomeFront families, it also supports local area restaurants and their staff.

Until a year ago, local families who became homeless were not sent to motels.  Instead, families went to HomeFront for help.  HomeFront’s Family Campus, our homelessness prevention funds, the 120 affordable apartments we manage, and our housing assistance resources were able to keep up with community need.

A combination of stagnating wages, a shortage of full time jobs and the sky-rocketing Mercer County rents, have resurrected the tragic reality of motel stays for some families and individuals. The COVID-19 crisis has made the issue worse, as HomeFront is unable to take more families into its Family Campus for health and safety reasons.
